Aarhus Festuge blev afholdt første gang i 1965, efter i 1964 at være blevet etableret som et eksperiment, der skulle aktivere byens institutioner og foreninger. Formålet var at præsentere byens kulturelle profil og Aarhus’ store potentiale for omverdenen. Den store succes har betydet, at Aarhus Festuge siden da er blevet en årligt tilbagevendende tradition.
